Artificial Elections: Generative AI in 2024 French Elections
Our investigation reveals how right-wing parties used unlabeled AI-generated imagery to amplify anti-EU and anti-immigrant narratives.
Project overview

We investigated how AI-generated images were deployed in French political campaigns during the 2024 European Parliament and legislative elections. We collected comprehensive data from official party websites and social media accounts across Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
Key findings reveal:
- We identified 51 instances of AI-generated images across Facebook, Instagram, and X
- The Rassemblement National, Reconquête, and Les Patriotes used generative AI imagery as an integral campaigning strategy
- A single instance was observed from both L'Alliance Rurale and the Union des Démocrates et Indépendants
- These images primarily dramatized anti-EU and anti-immigrant narratives
- None of the AI-generated images were labeled as such by the political parties or hosting platforms
- The synthetic nature of these images was not addressed in post comment sections
Our findings highlight the need for stricter content moderation and stronger EU-wide policies governing the use of generative AI in elections to safeguard democratic processes and electoral integrity.
